I ordered 2 new drop spindles from Spinerosity earlier this week and they arrived yesterday. One is a full-size lace weight, the other is a mini-spindle that was just too adorable (and too reasonably priced) to pass up.
I decided to play with some Norwegian undyed top (I think it's top) on the mini-spindle and am soooo glad I did. It was ridiculously fun to spin with and I think has really really helped me get a bit better at drafting. For the non-fiber fanatics who read the blog drafting is pretty much pulling fiber apart enough to create a thread of desired thickness via twist from spinning the spindle without pulling too much and having the spindle drop. If you don't pull fiber apart enough you wind up with thick, chunky yarn, if you pull too much the fiber can't sustain the weight of the spindle and breaks.
I have a spindle I bought for my birthday last year that is a bit heavier and in the range for medium weight yarns and recommended for beginners. While I've made some progress with it, I had big problems drafting, mostly with my yarn being waaaay thicker than I wanted.
The smaller, lighter mini-spindle seems to have really, really helped me get the hang of drafting and general hand motion. I'm still doing park-and-draft, but I'm getting better at it.
I have my hood up because I've got a migraine.

ArtFire Group Deal - $5.95 Per Month - Limited Time Offer
ArtFire Group Deal - $5.95 Per Month - Limited Time Offer
ArtFire, for those who don't know, is one of the major competitors of Etsy. Like Etsy, they provide an online marketplace for handmade and/or vintage goods. Unlike Etsy, rather than have a per item surcharge for each listing, you can either have a limited account which allows you to post and sell a limited number items for sale for free or you can have an account that you pay for per month with an unlimited number of sales. ArtFire does not take a percentage of sales either - the flat-rate monthly fee is it. (Don't forget, though, that services like PayPal may charge fees for transactions).
ArtFire offers importing of Etsy listings so you can switch over entirely or maintain shops on both sites.
From the look of it, ArtFire may have some better, low-cost options for advertising and other marketing tools.
As I slowly consider opening shop I've looked at ArtFire and Etsy and have yet to decide which service to go with or whether to use both. Etsy has a huge following already, but ArtFire seems more flexible and depending on sales, etc., less expensive to manage.
In the interests of full disclosure, ArtFire is currently running a contest offering a table-top photo studio setup to anyone who blogs about the limited $5.95/month offer, so that is part of why I've written this post. But I also wanted to get the word out to my fellow crafters who already are selling online or who are contemplating doing so.

Happi amigurumi kokeshi
I haven't featured an amigurumi in a while, but Happi caught my eye. She's part of a beautiful series of dolls with some really lovely detailing with beads and embroidery.
Be sure to check out dustymom's Etsy shop for her amigurumi.

Motivation - I needs some
I mentioned I felt like I was spinning my wheels health-wise a few days ago. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels in general lately too.
Lots of plans and ideas, but no action on them.
I think this is partly a matter of fear - of failure, of wasted time and money experimenting (because my perfectionist self insists that "failed" experiments are wastes), of wearing myself out.
It's also an issue of TOO MUCH STUFF running around my brain.
I want to start selling crafts online.
Do I go with Etsy or Artfire. Or both?
I have ideas about branding and packaging and photography style and theme (an overall archaeological theme). Do I do that stuff now or wait until I actually have an inventory of stuff to actually, you know, sell? Also, I am intimidated by Inkscape and Scribus, etc. I have a start on part of my planned logo, but I still have Inkscape-fear.
What about bookkeeping? Will I go nuts with that? I already have some excellent spreadsheet setups, but, but, numbers are the debil!
Oh, and what do I actually sell? The overall theme here is archaeological/Egyptological inspired stuff (I'm being vague out of an additional fear that someone will steal my ideas!!!eleventy!) :Looks around shiftily:
- Amigurumi patterns (that I need to actually make and write and layout and test and make look purty)
- Jewelry (that I need to actually make to be sure it isn't hideous because at the moment all the designs exist solely in my head and run around and mock me when I'm trying to sleep). And do I stick with all polymer clay (with the exception of findings) or do mixed media pieces? There's a learning curve here as well - I haven't done much jewelry. How much experimenting (and therefore time and money spent) am I going to need to do?
- Fascinators and hair bobbles (that won't necessarily fit with the rest of the theme, but are easy and fast and fun to make)
- Hand printed textiles?
Photography:
My hands shake. I suck at photography. The light is bad. I hate fiddling with stuff. I do have awesome ideas for settings and composition though. And a tripod. And a husband who is a photography hobbyist.
So, in general, I look at all of the above, get overwhelmed, twitch a little and then go back to aimlessly surfing the internet and reading about nuclear weapons or UFO accounts or mid-19th Century European royalty and politics instead of doing anything productive. I read various blog posts from various awesome people in the crafty world talking about a lot of the stuff (the crafting, not the UFOs) above, but I still do *nothing.*
It's a little bit like the classic paper-writing conundrum of getting so caught up in research that you never actually write anything. Or getting so caught up in collecting sources you don't so much read them as acquire them.
So - how do I kick myself in the ass/brain? And how do I do it in a way that doesn't wear me out physically or mentally?

Star Trek Beer Cozy = Awesome + Win
Lizzylaws has created a fabulous beer (or other bottle) cozy based on the Star Trek uniforms from Season 1 of the original series.
I love the details - the rank stripe, the delta-shield insignia with the science device.
Super nifty.
Even better, she's offering it as a finished object in her Etsy shop, LizardKnits or for the knitting-abled, as a pattern for sale on Ravelry.
Given my fondness for Star Trek, knitting, and root beer and ginger beer, I am an enormous fan!
You can find out more at her blog, too!

Merrick, The Elephant Man
Very cool amigurumi of John Merrick. Interesting topic, and another example of the very interesting mouth technique that Mr Fox has demonstrated with other pieces, like Mr. Bunnyford, one of the ultimate marriages of cute and nightmarish I've seen.

Crochet Saturn V
I am having serious nerd-gasm here. I've talked before about my love of the early US space program. In my idea notebook there is a page devoted to ideas for amigurumi and other crocheted items and space stuff is on it. I don't know if I would be quite ambitious enough to do the Saturn V or patient enough to try to keep in in scale, but Ms. Premise-Conclusion did both!!!
I am in awe. Sooooo nifty cool.
Even better - there's a pattern for sale in her Etsy shop! Get your nerdy butts over there, people!

Mommy mouse and Baby mouse Amigurumi Crochet Pattern.
I love this cute little mousey momma and baby in sling. The little bow on the tail is adorable too. Nice Christmas-y colors, too - for those who celebrate these could be great little decorations or gifts.

Zombies! Bunnies! Zombie-bunny!
Check out the adorable zombie bunny made by tinyowlknits. This is another example of less-is-more - I like the simple shapes - arms and legs can be fussy sometimes.
Anyway, the details here are adorable - the pink yarn under the eyes and the scar across the face are great zombie details.
Available from tinyowlknits' Etsy shop.

Schnauzer Puppy
I love these adorable schnauzer amigurumis by Jaravee. Her other puppy patterns are equally adorable. The eyebrows for the schnauzers are a wonderful touch.
Schnauzers, though, have a special place in my heart - my mom loves them and currently has two - a white male named Oliver and tiny salt-and-pepper female named Lily. Dad grumbles about them, but he loves them too. I'm rather fond of them myself, but, of course, no doggie could replace Oreo in my heart.
Oliver, actually, was indirectly responsible for my adopting Oreo. I had spent a week or so at my parents before moving up to Chicago and Oliver would sleep in my bed. I realized that I really, really liked having a doggie around and thus wound up going to look at doggies for adoption in Chicago and found Oreo.

Lambswool Robot Scarf
For the very latest in robot couture, check out SaraCarr66's Etsy shop. I'm a big fan of her robot-themed scarves - sooo cute and soft looking. And definitely a way to have fun with a necessary (for some places) accessory for winter.
And I think the pattern is subtle enough to work even with fancy-pants business attire. Very fun.

Ice-Cream and Noodle
Irenestrange has created these wonderful striped elephant who incorporate granny-squares in their design on backs and ears. They're adorable, plus a great way to use multiple colors or bust through some last bits of yarn in your stash. Very awesome!

For all your pretending to be a dinosaur needs...
...check out the Rawr Gloves by tallybates, available in her etsy shop (linked above). How awesome would these be? Except for the slight risk of having a psych eval as people watch you go "rawr, rawr, dino-saaaaur" and ram your hands together while riding on the bus...
Also, I'm pretty sure Wash from Firefly would love these: "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"

Chiyogami tea light candle holder 2 (3)
Here are some beautifully simple, elegant tea light holders made with beautiful Japanese papers. They're lovely with or without the tea lights in them and would be a wonderful addition to decor.
If you're worried about open flame, by the way, there are inexpensive LED "tea lights" available that would probably work almost as well as ordinary candles!
Very nice, raycious! Check out more of her work on Flickr or her etsy store.
